[ARCHIVED] Town, School District To Hold Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The Town of Wickenburg and the Wickenburg Unified School District #9 will hold a joint ribbon cutting ceremony for the recently completed Kerkes Street and Hassayampa Elementary School Drainage Project on December 13, 2016 at 11 a.m.

The public works project, started in September, 2016, is a unique effort that has brought together a number of partners, including the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona, the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, the Wickenburg Unified School District, and the Town of Wickenburg. The total cost for this project is $1,600,000.

The project has greatly enhanced public safety for the school’s parking lot by providing for the safe ingress and egress of emergency vehicles and buses. Crews added a new, secondary exit to the parking lot onto South Kerkes Street and improved traffic flow. Finally, the parking lot improvements will help fight persistent flooding that further jeopardized the safety of the students, staff, and emergency response vehicles.

While enhancing public safety, the project also includes storm water drainage improvements including a new spillway channel, redesign and repaving of the Hassayampa Elementary School parking lot, and relocation of utilities. The new spillway will effectively extend East Coconino Street to Kerkes Street, and it will be used as a one-way public roadway to better improve connectivity in the area between South Kerkes Street and South Valentine Street.

The project also includes beautification of the area, with extension of fencing and gabion baskets to separate the channel from the parking lot. Along the spillway’s banks, decorative horseshoes have been installed to enhance the artistic nature of Wickenburg’s proud western heritage while discouraging skateboarding and other potentially dangerous activities.

The joint ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at the entrance to Hassayampa Elementary School, located at the intersection of South Valentine Street and East Coconino Street. Please RSVP by December 8, 2016 to Aaron White at
